We Have No Plans Of Scrapping Free Mobile Money Transfer – Vodafone Ghana

Vodafone Ghana has stated that it is not considering scrapping its telco waiver (free mobile money transfer) on all transactions anytime soon.

Mobile Financial Services Manager for Vodafone Ghana, Judith Adumoa Bossman, disclosed this on the Super Morning Show on Wednesday, May 4, during an interaction with co-host, Winston Amoah.

She explained that “for Vodafone, we understand that our customers have difficulties from the economic hardships emanating from the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the reduction is to help our customers navigate these challenges.”

Vodafone is the only network in Ghana currently waiving off its transaction fee of 0.75% on Mobile Money transactions. This means that sending money from Vodafone to Vodafone users or Vodafone to other network users is free, however, the e-Levy charges will apply.

While many have lauded Vodafone for this move, concerns have been raised that this may pose future challenges to the network (in terms of losses) but Madam Adumoa Bossman in reaction to such concerns emphasised that the benefits [from the initiative] outweigh the losses likely to be made.

“The gains have been more,” she stressed.

While entreating more people to subscribe to the network, she expressed delight over the progress the network has made since it started absorbing the telco charge on Mobile Money transactions.

“If you realise, as far back as 2019, we started free peer-to-peer transfers and then last year we introduced the free mobile money interoperability and we are quite excited because our customers actually hopped on to these free services and we have seen phenomenal growth over the period waiving off the service charge,” she said.
