The Ancient Hunter, Akpene and Torgbui Ganyenu in this episode take us on a journey into the caught-up web of drug abuse and addiction among the youth.
Drug Abuse and Addiction affect your brain and behaviour. When you’re addicted to drugs, you can’t resist the urge to use them, no matter how much harm they may cause. The earlier you seek treatment for drug addiction or drug abuse (also called substance use disorder), the more likely you are to curb some of the more dire effects.
Drug addiction or Drug abuse isn’t just heroin, cocaine, or other illegal drugs. One can be addicted to alcohol, nicotine, sleep and anti-anxiety medications, and other legal medications or substances.
People also get addicted to prescription or illegally obtained narcotic medications for pain or opioids. This is a preceding problem in most countries which leads to drug overdose deaths.
Initially, you take a drug because you like how it makes you feel. You will be deceived into thinking you have control over how often you take it and the dose. But with time, drugs change how your brain works. These changes can last a long time. You lose control which contributes to damaging behaviours.
