A tragic armed assault at Nangani, near the Ghana–Burkina Faso border, has left one officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) dead and another battling for his life. The incident occurred late Sunday night between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., when unidentified gunmen believed to be operating around the Bawku enclave opened fire on the officers.

According to preliminary reports, the two officers were returning from night duty on a motorbike when they were ambushed near the Nangani checkpoint. One officer died from multiple gunshot wounds, while the other sustained severe injuries, including a broken leg.
Both officers were initially rushed to Blessing Hospital at Wedama, but due to the severity of their conditions, they were later referred to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where one was pronounced dead on arrival.
Sources say the assailants fled with the officers’ service weapons after the attack. The motive remains unclear, but security analysts suspect it may be tied to ongoing cross-border criminal activities and instability spilling over from the Sahel region.

The District Chief Executive for Tempane, Joseph Mbilla, condemned the attack as “barbaric and unfortunate” and confirmed that a joint security operation involving the military, police, and immigration service has been launched to hunt down the perpetrators and stabilize the area.
He added that the military has already been deployed to Nangani and neighboring Basyonde communities to intensify patrols and protect officers and civilians.
Residents are calling for stronger surveillance, more checkpoints, and regular joint patrols to ensure lasting safety for both officers and civilians living along Ghana’s northern frontier.
