Gomoa Okyereko Accident: 16 Dead, 40 In Critical Conditions

16 people died yesterday at Gomoa Okyereko in Central Region following a fatal crash between a fuel tanker and a bus.

Yesterday’s fatal accident which occurred at Gomoa Okyereko in the Central Region took away 15 lives on the spot, with the 16th person dying after arrival at a medical facility while 40 others sustained major degrees of injuries after a bus collided with a Fuel Tanker at Gomoa Okyereko near Budumburam – Liberia Camp. The injured according to sources, are receiving treatments from the Efuttu Municipal Hospital in Winneba.

According to the Municipal Directorate of the Ghana National Fire Service in the area, a distress call was received around 05:14 about the accident that had occurred at Gomoa Okyereko close to Winneba Junction.

Upon arrival, they witnessed the accident involving a Yuotong mini bus with registration CR-5866-L having passengers on board from Liberia to Ghana (Liberia Camp) and a Fuel tanker with registration WR-2063-10 with three(3) persons onboard heading towards Cape Coast.

According to the information gathered, the driver of the Yuotong Bus veered off his lane in the curve leading to a head-on crash with the fuel tanker. It took three(3) hours for the rescue team to rescue the living and dead from both vehicles with bodies torn apart.

Drivers were advised to slow down on the various highways and also be cautious when taking a curve. Bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Effutu Municipal Hospital for preservation and identification by various families.

Speaking to some members of the Liberia Camp community about the incident, most are still in a state of disbelief and hoping that this never happened to their loved ones. Those who had come to terms with the reality were seen mourning.

The National Road Safety Authority attributed the cause of the accident to fatigue and tiredness. They further cautioned all drivers and passengers to be vigilant and extra careful on the road. Drivers have been advised to rest anytime they feel tired to prevent such situations.
