3 Dead in Early Morning Accident at Tsopoli on Accra–Aflao Road

A quiet Sunday morning already filled with sorrow and heavy hearts resulting from the helicopter crash earlier in the week turned tragic when a fatal road accident claimed the lives of three people along the busy Accra–Aflao highway at Tsopoli. The crash involved a Ford Transit minibus that was reportedly commuting from Mafi Sasekpe, through Adidome, and onward to Accra.

Details of the Incident
According to initial reports, the accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday. The Ford Transit, a common mode of transport for long-distance commuters, was carrying passengers heading towards Accra when it became involved in a collision at Tsopoli, a known accident-prone section of the highway.
While the exact number of passengers on board at the time is yet to be confirmed, eyewitness accounts suggest that the impact was severe, leaving the vehicle mangled and several passengers trapped.
Three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
Emergency Response
Reports from locals indicate that emergency responders, including personnel from the Ghana Police Service and National Ambulance Service, arrived shortly after the incident. The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. The severity of injuries among survivors remains unclear.
Authorities are yet to confirm the precise cause of the crash. However, investigators are considering possibilities such as driver fatigue, mechanical failure, speeding, or poor visibility as potential contributing factors.
Community Concerns
The Accra–Aflao highway is a major transport corridor connecting several towns in the Volta Region to the capital city. It has, however, gained notoriety for frequent accidents often attributed to over-speeding, overtaking, and narrow road sections.
Residents of Tsopoli and surrounding communities have renewed calls for:
-
Stricter speed enforcement along the route
-
Installation of more road signs and speed ramps in accident-prone zones
-
Regular vehicle inspections for long-distance commercial vehicles
Road Safety Context
Statistics from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) show that road accidents remain one of the leading causes of injury and death in Ghana. Commercial vehicles like the Ford Transit are particularly vulnerable due to the long distances they travel and the high passenger loads they carry.
In 2024 alone, over 2,200 people were reported dead from road crashes in Ghana, with the Greater Accra and Volta Regions ranking among the highest in fatalities.
Authorities Urge Caution
Police have urged drivers to remain cautious, especially during early morning and late-night travel when visibility and driver alertness are often compromised.
An official statement on the Tsopoli accident is expected from the Ghana Police Service and NRSA in the coming days, once investigations progress and victims’ families have been informed.
GHPARROT will continue to follow developments and provide updates as more details emerge about the victims, cause of the accident, and official safety recommendations.
