TMA, GNPC and Partners Launch “Eco in Motion”

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), in partnership with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and several corporate organisations, has launched Eco in Motion—an ambitious campaign aimed at transforming Tema into a cleaner and greener city.

The initiative, described as a long-term environmental project rather than a one-off exercise, began with a symbolic cleanup of the backyards of participating institutions. This gesture marks the first step in a broader agenda to restore Tema’s environment and promote sustainable urban living.
Eunice Akosua Ofori, Principal Officer for Corporate Affairs at GNPC, explained that the campaign is designed to go beyond routine sanitation.
“We are starting from our own backyard. This is just the beginning. The vision is to extend the exercise across the metropolis,” she said.
She further noted that Eco in Motion aligns with the Mayor of Tema’s plan to reset the city as a modern, sustainable, and environmentally conscious industrial hub.
“It’s not only about clearing rubbish; it’s about protecting the environment so we don’t have to repeat the cycle. That’s why we are involving businesses and institutions to make this initiative sustainable,” Ms. Ofori added.
The programme will be rolled out gradually to communities including Bankuman and coastal areas, combining cleanup exercises with recreational activities to encourage community participation and ownership.

Tema Mayor, Hon. Ebi Bright, welcomed the project, describing it as timely and aligned with her agenda of restoring Tema’s original vision.
“Tema was designed as Ghana’s model city, and it is our collective duty to maintain that legacy. Eco in Motion is exactly the kind of collaboration we need—where corporate Ghana, the Assembly, and residents join forces to create a cleaner, greener metropolis,” she said.
The campaign is expected to run throughout the year, with its success dependent on resources and continued support from partner organisations.
As Ms. Ofori emphasized:
“Our goal is not just to clean today and return tomorrow. It is to build a Tema that is clean, green, and worthy of pride for generations to come.”
