Tema Face-lift Campaign: “Tema Must Remain Worthy of Its Heritage as Ghana’s Model Planned City” – Ebi Bright
As part of her ongoing Tema Face-lift Campaign, Mayor Ebi Bright has led a major cleanup and development control exercise around Republic Road School in Tema Central. The initiative, aligned with her Tema Transformation Agenda and the National Sanitation Day Program, which aims to restore discipline, protect public spaces, and reinforce Tema’s legacy as Ghana’s model planned city.

Hon. Ebi Bright, Mayor of Tema, leads the Tema Face-lift Campaign to clear unauthorized structures around Republic Road School. The cleanup forms part of her Tema Transformation Agenda to restore order, beautify public spaces, and preserve Tema’s reputation as Ghana’s model planned city.
This decisive move forms part of her ongoing “Tema Transformation Agenda” – a campaign aimed at reclaiming public spaces, promoting safety, and restoring Tema’s image as Ghana’s first planned city. It was done in conjunction with the National Sanitation Day Program
For the past five months, Mayor Bright has paid several visits to the Republic Road School, and other communities within Tema, each visit underscoring her growing concern about congestion, encroachment, and unauthorized trading activities that had gradually taken over the area.
“This school sits at the heart of Tema’s history,” she said during the exercise. “Yet its surroundings have been overtaken by disorder. Today marks a turning point — we are taking back this space for our children, for learning, and for the future of Tema.”
The operation, carried out in collaboration with the Physical Planning, Works, and Environmental Health Departments of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), saw the removal of kiosks, container shops, and other illegal structures that had encroached on walkways, drains, and the school frontage.
Mayor Bright emphasized that while the Assembly supports small-scale enterprises, it will not tolerate any activity that compromises public safety or Tema’s carefully planned layout.

“Development must be guided by order,” she stressed. “Our goal is not to destroy livelihoods but to protect lives, ensure safety, and restore the dignity of our city.”
As part of the beautification plan, the Mayor also directed that trees be planted and grass restored around the school compound to enhance the environment and set an example for other communities to follow.
Teachers and residents expressed deep appreciation for her proactive leadership, noting that her intervention had finally addressed a 30-year-old challenge that had plagued the area.
Mayor Bright reaffirmed that the Republic Road operation is only the beginning of a broader effort to enforce development control across Tema.
“We are setting a standard,” she said. “What we are doing here around Republic Road School will be replicated across the city. Tema must remain organized, beautiful, and worthy of its heritage as Ghana’s model planned city.”
