Speaker To Ewurabena Aubynn, Don’t Abuse The People’s Trust

Parliament has officially welcomed a new face. Ewurabena Aubynn, the newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma North, has been sworn into office by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
The swearing-in followed a formal communication from the Electoral Commission, dated July 14, 2025, which confirmed her victory. Her addition brings the number of female MPs in Ghana’s Parliament to 41, a milestone the Speaker described as a “blessing.”

With her joining the House, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) now holds two-thirds of the seats, giving the Majority more leverage in decision-making without resistance.
Aubynn won the seat with 34,090 votes, narrowly beating her opponent from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who received 33,881 votes.
However, the swearing-in did not go without drama. The Minority Caucus refused to participate in the ceremony. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip, stated that although they would not take part in the swearing-in, they would still contribute to other parliamentary duties.
A Word of Caution from the Speaker
After officially swearing her in, Speaker Bagbin warmly congratulated Aubynn, highlighting her achievement as the youngest MP in Ghana’s Ninth Parliament. But he also had a message of caution.
He encouraged her to stay humble, punctual, and eager to learn not just from laws and procedures but from people around her.
“You are now the hope of the people in your constituency,” Bagbin said. “This is a trust, and I hope you do not abuse it. Four years will pass quickly, and your performance will be the only thing people remember.”
He reminded her that although she ran on a party ticket, it was her face and name on the ballot, not the party’s.
“Do not let anyone change who you are. Be your true self and dedicate your work to the people who voted for you,” he advised.

NDC Majority: What’s Next for Ewurabena Aubynn and the NDC?
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga also welcomed Aubynn and expressed joy that the people of Ablekuma North finally had representation in Parliament after a long wait.
He pointed out that the NDC now holding two-thirds of the seats was historic and presented a unique opportunity.
“With this majority, we can push for real constitutional reforms and policies that will benefit the country,” Ayariga said. “We will use this power wisely and responsibly to serve Ghanaians better.”
