Mpox Alert: 16 New Cases Confirmed in Ghana

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed 16 new Mpox cases, raising the country’s total to 234 as of July 18, 2025. This is a jump from 218 cases reported just four days earlier.

Despite the rise in infections, there’s some good news—no new deaths have been recorded. In fact, Ghana has not reported any Mpox-related deaths to date, and there are currently no patients hospitalized due to the virus.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection that spreads primarily through direct skin-to-skin contact. It can also be transmitted by touching rashes, bodily fluids, or contaminated items used by someone who’s infected.

The Ghana Health Service continues to urge the public to follow preventive measures. These include:

  • Avoiding close physical contact with infected individuals

  • Frequent handwashing with soap and water

  • Avoiding contact with rashes or fluids

  • Wearing protective clothing when caring for sick individuals

Symptoms typically start with fever and body aches, followed by a distinctive rash. The rash can show up on the face, chest, hands, or genitals.

While most people recover without serious complications, Mpox can be more dangerous for young children, pregnant women, and those with existing health conditions.

Health officials are reminding the public to stay informed through credible sources and to report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility.
