Mayor Ebi Bright Suspends New Temporary Structure Permits in Tema

The Mayor of Tema, Hon. Ebi Bright, has announced an immediate halt to the issuance of new permits for temporary structures across the metropolis.
The decisive move, she explained, comes in response to growing concerns over public safety, poor sanitation, and a surge in unauthorized developments that are gradually choking the city’s infrastructure.

In recent months, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has noted a rapid spread of unregulated kiosks, shipping containers, and makeshift stalls, particularly in hotspots such as Community 1 Market, residential areas, school ceremonial roads, and Tema New Town. According to city authorities, these structures have been a major cause of:
-
Blocked drainage systems leading to flooding during heavy rains
-
Fire hazards due to unsafe electrical connections
-
Obstructed walkways affecting pedestrian safety
Key Measures Announced
Mayor Ebi Bright outlined three immediate actions under the suspension:
-
No New Permits – All new applications for temporary structures will be rejected until further notice.
-
Removal of Unpermitted Structures — Any structure without official approval will be dismantled.
-
Compliance Reviews – Existing permitted structures will be inspected to ensure adherence to city regulations.

The Mayor further revealed that the TMA is collaborating with trader unions and traditional leaders on a long-term urban space plan. This initiative will introduce designated trading zones equipped with safe, affordable, and well-organized infrastructure for vendors, ensuring business activities thrive without compromising public order.
“We are not against enterprise — we are against disorder,” Mayor Bright stressed. “Let’s build a Tema that works for everyone.”
